TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Growing up as the oldest brother and cousin in his family, DeHondre Simon carried the weight of high expectations. With younger siblings and relatives constantly watching, he knew the spotlight was always on him. As his younger brother, I followed his every move—looking up to him, learning from him, and trying to walk the path he paved.
“We were hard on him because we knew you and your cousins were always watching,” said Karen Gayle, mother of DeHondre Simon and me. “Being the oldest sibling can be hard sometimes because you’re a leader—and you didn’t necessarily ask to be one. But De handled that pressure very well.”
“Yeah, during my journey with football, even though I felt like I wasn’t getting the proper looks or the recognition I deserved, I knew I competed with the best of the best,” Simon said. “I went against some of the top players in the state of Florida through camps and daily practices. I knew where I stood.”
Simon’s path became even more competitive when he moved to Fort Scott, Kansas, where he joined a team stacked with Division I prospects and five-star athletes fresh from Under Armour All-American games.
“I played and competed against the best daily for two years—and I dominated,” he said. “I saw all of them getting offers and signing, so when the FIU opportunity came—even though it was just a preferred walk-on—it felt like a dream come true. I was grateful for that.”
He added that being a role model to his younger siblings and cousins gave him extra motivation.
“I knew they were watching me to find inspiration for their own journeys,” Simon said. “Even though I didn’t get a full offer, I still chased the opportunity.”
After FIU, Simon continued his football career at Florida A&M University, participating in spring practices with the team.
“I showed consistency, even if I didn’t get to play in the season,” he said. “I still got to be part of a Division I program and compete with guys heading to the league. I’m forever grateful. I think my hard work and dedication paid off—and I’m satisfied with how it all turned out.”
Simon’s journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and quiet leadership. While his path wasn’t always easy, he embraced the pressure that came with being a role model. For his younger siblings, including me, his story continues to be a powerful reminder that success isn’t just about recognition—it’s about perseverance, integrity, and the impact you leave on those who follow.
